2005: How do I look? Capturing the face, expanding the frame.

These paintings are positioned within the discourses of portraiture to enable an exploration of the older woman’s face as a site of power, authority, complexity and desire.
How do we, as older women negotiate spaces of invisibility and silence within our culture? How do we open up possibilities, expand the (picture) frame so that our presence impacts on the visually acceptable faces of femininity, the faces constructed by and validated in our society.
